Professional Education, Training and Research Unit (PETRU)

The Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH) Professional Education, Training and Research Unit (PETRU) was established in 1980 when GCGMH, then named Bohol Provincial Hospital, was designated as a teaching-training hospital of Regional Health Office VII by virtue of the Ministry of Health Administrative Order No. 83, Series of 1980.  The PETRU is directly under the Office of the Medical Center Chief (MCCO) whose main responsibility is to facilitate the continuing professional development and training of all clinical and non-clinical personnel of GCGMH. It is also responsible for capacity-building and the development of the research skills of all personnel.

The PETRU is headed by the Chief Training Officer (CTO), also known as the Chief Academic Officer (CAcO), who reports directly to the Medical Center Chief and who coordinates with the Heads of all the different Departments, Sections, and Services of GCGMH for their training programs and research activities.

The PETRU has three (3) Sections, namely: the Graduate Medical Education Section (GME), the Health Sciences Education Section (HSE), and the Research & Innovation Section (RIS). The Chief Training Officer coordinates with the Chief of Medical Professional Staff (CMPS) and the Heads/Chairmen of the Clinical Departments regarding the training of the Medical Officers III (MO IIIs) or the Resident Physician Trainees, the Medical Officers IV (MO IVs), and the Medical Specialists.

As a teaching-training hospital, the CTO supervises the training activities and the performance of the Resident Physician Trainees as well as those of the Postgraduate Interns (PGIs), the Medical Clerks of affiliate schools of medicine, the clinical, nursing, allied medical and non-clinical students of affiliate colleges and universities or Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).  The CTO facilitates the conduct of training of the hospital employees, including the orientation of newly hired medical personnel, interns, and medical clerks, as well as the implementation of the different health programs and projects of the Department of Health. Most of the training conducted by GCGMH provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Units which can be credited towards the CPD Units requirement for renewal of the professional’s PRC License.  GCGMH has been a Professional Regulation Commission CPD provider since 2018.
